Brazilian Butt Lift Surgery in Richmond
Classy curves never go out of style, but if genetics have left you with a flat or shapeless buttocks, you may feel like there’s little you can do. Adding a few pounds won’t work, because you can’t choose where the extra “padding” goes. Squats and lunges can tone your glutes, but they won’t change your shape significantly.
The good news is that you can get fuller, rounder buttocks with Brazilian butt lift surgery. This innovative procedure combines liposuction with fat grafting to add volume to the buttocks and create a nice “frame” by reshaping the lower back, hips, and thighs.
Why consider a Brazilian butt lift?
Like many parts of the body, we only have so much control over how our buttocks are shaped. If you naturally store a lower proportion of fat in the buttocks compared to your waist, hips or thighs, your butt may appear flat or shapeless.
A Brazilian butt lift essentially helps reverse this ratio by removing fat from the waist, hips, and thighs and relocating a portion of it to your buttocks. The result is a rounder, fuller buttock contour plus a nicer shape to the entire lower body. Using your own fat to enhance the buttocks offers many benefits:
- Results will last as long as you maintain your weight
- The buttocks look and feel natural in and out of clothing
- Only a few, tiny incisions for liposuction are required; no surgical scars on the buttocks
- Swimsuits, jeans, and form-fitting clothing will have a more flattering fit
- You can lose unwanted fat at the same time you enhance your buttocks
Am I a good candidate?
If you are bothered by the shape (or lack thereof) of your buttocks, and you would like a fuller, rounder shape, a Brazilian butt lift can help you achieve just that. However, you need to have certain qualities to benefit from the procedure:
- You’re at a healthy, stable body weight. Weight fluctuations may negatively impact results.
- You have good skin contraction. Despite the name, a Brazilian butt lift is not a body lifting procedure, and won’t address excess or sagging skin.
- You want rounder and fuller buttocks. This procedure will enhance buttock volume; liposuction alone can improve shape without increasing size.
- You have enough body fat to use. Very lean patients may not have enough fat to extract to complete the procedure optimally.
If you don’t meet all these qualifications, don’t worry—Dr. Chen will discuss your procedure options with you make and help you decide the best course of action to make the improvements you seek.
How does Brazilian butt lift surgery work?
Dr. Chen begins by removing fat from the areas that bother you most, concentrating on the areas that frame the buttocks. He uses a less invasive liposuction technology that removes fat cells cleanly and with less trauma to surrounding tissues compared to older techniques. Common areas for liposuction include:
- Lower belly
- Lower back and flanks
- Inner and outer thighs
Following liposuction, the appropriate portion of the removed fat is purified, and Dr. Chen injects this fat strategically into various points around the buttocks to create a fuller, rounder, yet natural looking contour.

About Brazilian butt lift recovery
The recovery after a Brazilian butt lift requires some unique modifications on your part. You will be mobile the same day as surgery, and encouraged to get up and walk around frequently.
You will not, however, be permitted to site directly on your buttocks for about 2 weeks after surgery. You will need to stand or lie on your belly for everything except using the bathroom. Following this initial healing period, you will be allowed to sit on a “donut” pillow or in another modified position; Dr. Chen will explain these restrictions in detail.
Most patients are able to return to work within 1 to 2 weeks, given that they follow Dr. Chen’s instructions for modification. You may need to work from home for the first week or so. Exercise can be gradually resumed after 3 to 4 weeks.
Brazilian butt lift vs. buttock implants
Until recently, women who wanted larger, rounder buttocks had to consider butt implants to get lasting results. While implants can produce satisfying results for some, they carry a risk for complications such as infection or capsular contracture (hardening of surrounding tissue), and many patients disliked the unnaturally firm feel that implants can have.
A Brazilian butt lift addresses the shortcomings of implants by using your own natural tissue to enhance the buttocks. When performed by a skilled, experienced plastic surgeon, Brazilian butt lift surgery is safe and procedures lasting results. Fat looks and feels completely natural, there is no chance for your body rejecting it, and there is no implant to be replaced periodically.
